Beautiful weather prevailed for the commencement of the Wanganui Jockey Club's Spring Meeting the few light showers that felt' during the nighft having a freshening effect and making the turf soft and springy. The racing throughout was extremely interesting, and isome good finishes were witnessed. The Spring Handicap proved a gift to The Shannon, who waited on the fielid till the straight was reached, when McNamara brought her through, and, judging the pace nicdy, won on the post by a nose from Loch. Erne, .who ran a capital race. Mr Watts' mare was in splendid form, and looked a .perfect picture. The Guineas was a runaway race from post to finish, Achilles never being extended at any time. Porirua also rail a good colt, and should ran well at Hawke's Bay. The I most exciting race of the day was the Flying Handicap, for which Sir G. Clifford's Windwhistle was made a strong favourite. She, however, had to be pulled back when a furlong had been run to get a position, otherwise she would probably have won. The races were run punctually to time, andthe management of Mr F. Moffatt,, eecre-tai-v, Mt nothing to be desired. The Gaivison Band, under Conductor Crichton, discoursed an excellent programme, which way much aipipreciated.
