SHOCKING RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
Per Press Association. INVKRCARGILL, December 3. A shocking railway accident occurred last night near Morton Mains. On the arrival.of a special train with the mails afc Edendale, the driver found entangled in the cow-catcher the wheel of a, railway tricycle. Parties searched the line in. the vicinity of Morton Mains, where Frank Thomas, assistant ganger, was found dead, and Lawrence Fraser, a ganger, terribly mutilated, so much so that his life is despaired of. In view of the passage of special and Ministerial trains, some men were ordered to inspect the road, and it appears; that when on this duty the accident occurred. It is said that the men left home early for this purpose, and could have been back in time to avoid the risk.' The nigUt was clear, but there were some grades in the neighbourhood, and it is supposed the train came suddenly on them on the crest of a rise.
