OPENING OF THE NEW BUILDING

The new railway, station was opened for traffic yesterday. The structure is in the main two-storeyed. The lower storey is 187 ft 6in in length by 18ft in depths and the uppa- 120 x 18ft. The baseuient is divide! into guards' md porters' room, 18 x 15, lost luggage room 18 x 10, parcels office 40 x 18, booking office 22 x 18, general lobby 25 x 15, stationmaster's.office 12 x 18, traffic inspector's oftice 12 "x 18, clerk's office 10 x 18, ladies'" waiting room 15 x 18, and lavatories The main entrance from Tnupo Quay is approached underneath a verandah, 68 x 10, and through the general lobby, which is fitted with seats and contains a fireplace. . On the righthand side of the entrance are two ticket windows communicating with the booking office. From the :iatter access is obtained to the upper storey by means of a wide staircase of easy grade, which kads to a corridor, &4 x 4ft, and tJijs ojieiis into the District Manager's office, Ig x 18, records 13.6 x 12.6, lavatories 7.6 x 7, telegraph gallery 29.6 x 13.6, and traffic clerk's office 43 x iB. An important improvement that has been carried out- is the widening and lengthening of the platform. This is now 187-I't long and 20ft wide; whereas that at the old building was only 68ft long ami 12ft. wide. Five double incandescent globes furnish the lighting of the platform. We understand that the building cost between £2500 and £3000. It is very solidly built, and reflects great credit on those responsible. The work has been carried out under the superintendence of Mr. C. Wilcock (foreman of works), assisted by Mr James Matbieson (leading carpenter on this seclion of the line) and Mr R. Miller (leading painter). ■
