LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The scarcity of milling bush in some I parts of Hawkc's Bay has induced more than one person to turn attention to the burnt logs lying about in hundreds in many districts which are being opened up for settlement. In the majority of cases the fallen trees have only been scorched by fires lighted by settlers with the object of clearing tlie ground. A sawmill is now ] being erected at Mangatera, nesr Danevirke, to utilise the scorched timber. The other day (says the Auckland Herald) we recorded the death, of a lad named Connolly, he having been torn and bitten by a stallion at Hamilton. The father of tho lad was employed as a. foreman platelayer on the railway, and was only Jately transferred to Hamilton. What makes the •above fatality doubly sad and distressing is the fact of another son of Mr ponnolly's having been killed while bushfelling, about two years ago. The poor lad's mother, on ■bearing of the accident, hastened to tho place, and instead of any of the friends or i neighbours gently breaking the news to her, admitted her to the room where the body lay a corpse. The shock was so severe as to affect the poor woman's reason, and for many months her strange manner caused her husband and family much anxiety. Eventually, about six months ago, by the advice of two medioa.! gentlemen, Mr Connolly conveyea his wife to the Lunatic Asylum at Avondale, where she still remains. Great sympathy is felt for the relatives under the melancholy circumstances.
