HORTICULTURAL SHOW.

The Autumn Show of the Wanganui Horticultural and General! Produce Society opened yesterday afternoon. Despite the fact that the Show was held a month earlier than in previous years, the entries were fairly numerous. Jn pot plants, Mr A. D. Willis was most successful, his entries being .of a very high quality. Mr Jas. Cannons occupied premier place for ferns. For cut flowers the entries were numerous und of a high quality. In the form will garden produce department there were sumo really splendid entries. One of the most interesting exhibitions was that of Mr J. T. Sinclair, whose floral display was greatly admired. Included in the display were exquisite wreaths, bridal bouquet, and a. novelty in the shape of a shepherd's crook to be carried by a bridesmaid. Mr Sinclair also exhibited some fine tomatoes, one weighing ll^lbs. The number taken from one plant was fifty-two. Messrs James Laird and Sons also had a splendid exhibition. Mr W. T. Benefield had a magnificent collection of apples, there being 100 uf the most up-to-date varieties. Ho also exhibited 50 varieties "of other t'ruils. Mrs Fitzherbert's collection of Oaliforriian poppies and cactus dahlias was much admired. Pressure on our space precludes a lengthy reference to the other departments. There was a large attendance of tho public in the .afternoon. A still larger number of people attended in the evening. Armstrong's Orchestra rendered a number of pleasing items during the evening. The hat-trimming competition, for which there were eight entries, proved very amusing. The decorated tables numbered twelve, and were very tastefully arranged. Mr W. Knight made a, most efficient secretary, and to' him and his committeemen a great deal of credit is due for the excellence of the Show.
