RATS IN .THE POST OFFICES.

WELLINGTON, May 14. The presence oi rats in post offices being to a large extent due to the practice on the part of the public of enclosing wedding cake in paper packets or cardboard boxes, the Postmaster-General has decided to rigid y enforce the rule compelling tin boxes to be used for the transmission of the article named.
At a meeting of the City Council tonight, "the Mayor stated he had had an interview with the Governor, at which the latter complimented his Worship on the cleanliness of the city, and the precautionary measures taken against the introduction of the plifgue. ThJtr'City to-night decided to allow/ poultry (fowls, ducks, geese, turkej"ssartd pigeon) to be kept within the city on '.payment "of a license fee of 5s per annunf fcno poultry house to be within 50 fcet W.a dwelling or ten feet of a boundary fe£ce.._This- is . gractioally prohibition, except' where those' desirous of.keeping"Jbirds'.have - a fairly large area.
