BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY.
■» J The Rev. F: H. Spencer, agent of the 1 a. ove Society, has just .returned' from aI 1 three-months tour in the South Island, ] where he has visited all the principal towns, i and many of the smaller ones. He found i most of the auxiliaries and branches in a moribund state, but was successful in reviving them, and in forming many new branches, and has introduced a scheme by which persons will, by means of a letter, be asked to contribute regularly to the funds of the Society, and to take in the monthly magazines. He -also succeeded in removing prejudice and ignorance as to the aims of the Society, many feeling that having, a Bible in their possession was a sufficient reason for paying no attention to the Society ; but when it was pointed out that the Bible Society was to the various Churches in all their home and foreign work what the arsenal is to the army and navy, many were led to tuke a sympathetic part in the Society. Mr. Spencer leaves on Tuesday, and will visit the Southern part of this island and Hawke's Bay, and will return to Wanganui \at the end of May, when he will address' a public meeting.
