BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the AA'anganui Borough -Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening, there .being present— His AYorship the Mayor and councillors* Griffiths, Gatenby, Caiman, Collins, Bell, Lilliton aud Richardsou. An apology was received for the absence of Cr. Parsons. Minutes— The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Bank Book— The bank book was laid on the table showing a debit balance of £2128 6s 7d as against £1986 4s 4d at last meeting. : Thanks — Mr A. Giliuonr, Foreman of Works, - wrote thanking the Council for granting him a bonus and a hionth's leave of absence.. St. George's Swimming Club— Mr H. Neverrnah, Hou Secretary to (he above Club, wrote applying for the use of the Corporation Baths for Thursday afternoon, . 16th February, and a'so for Friday evening, 17th inst., for the Club's Championship Swimming Meeting. ' Granted, subject to usual condition. Farmer's Cooperative Association— M<" G. S. Bridge, Chairman of Directors of tlie United Farmers' Co operative Association, wrote stating tint tbey propose to build a brick store on a portion* of the Reolaimed Land adjoining Messrs Turnbull and Co.'s preiuises. At present this locality is with • in the inner area, where brick party walls are required by the Borough bye-laws, but understanding that tbe Council was considering the question of excluding the land lying between Taopo Quay and the River Bauk from the inner area, the ' ssuciation asked to be allowed to huild without being compelled to erect brick walls.— Mr Cun ingham waited on the Council in supportof the application.— The Mayor slated that he had no knowledge of tbe Council having ever considered the question of eliminating any portion of the inner area from the operation. Mr James, the architect, laid the plans of the. proposed building on the table.— The Council deeided to give ihe matter further considaration before de ciding re the application. Fire Brigade— Captain C. V. Powell and Mr T. M., Copeland, Secretary -to the local Fire Brigade, wrote asking the Council to take into consideration the necessity oi an : increase of £50 per aiinum to the annual i subsidy/ which is at present £150 per '. annum. It was pointed out that the present amount wai inadequate to maintain the lire prevention service of the town in ; an. efficient manner, and further tbat the 1 present sum is the same as the Brigade : was receiving. 13 years ago. The letter referred to the great increase in the member- : ship and size of buildings in the town. Tbe Brigade's immediate requirements wero stated as being two sub-stations with the necessary reels, hose, standpipeJ, branches, etc., to protect the property of citizens 1 living in the .upper end of tbe Avenue, Glasgow Street and River Bank, as well as moroliose in the head station, ladders, etc , while the main station' itseli requires attention. — The Mayor said that there was no doubt that the Brigade made out a good case. The Council's financial year ended on 31st March, and that was tho proper time to consider it. He therefore moved that the letter be held over until next year's estimates are under consideration. Tho motion was carried. Public Library—The directors of the Public Library wrote asking that a street crossing should be formed opposite tbe Library in Ridgway Street.— On the motion of the.Mayor, Crs Lifiiton, Griffiths and the Mayor were appointed a Committee to visit the spot and report at next meeting. Verandah — Permission was granted to Mr R. Davis, builderi to erect a verandah in'frcnt of Mr Keith's new premises in Guyton §fcreet, subject |>o the usual conditions. •
