RANGITIKEI NOTES.

CADET CORPS. I

A DROWNING ACCIDENT.

(Fkom Our Own Cohhuspondekt.) MARTON, Monday, The monthly, meeting of Court Little john, A.0.F., was held at the Lodge Rooms on Saturday night, their being a fair attendance. Bro. Gibbons, who had attended the District Grand Lodge, reported on their action in regard to the Lodge's application for secession, and staled that the authority of the High Court had first to be obtained. Threo new members were initiated and four proposed, Bro. Anderson acted as Installing Officer, and installed the following :— C.R., Bro. Cbiverton, ; S.C.R., Bro J. G. Ritchie; Secretary, Bro. W. C. Kitney ; Treasurer, Bro. T. Lound; Minute Secietary, Bro. Trotfc; S.W., Bro. W. Nicol ; J.W, Bro. Wales; 5.8., Bro. Anderson; J. 8., Bro. Black. After voles of thinks hud been passed to the retiring oliiccfrs, tho Lodge was closed. Mrs Price, of York Farm, wants a lady's help. I hcav the Sandon Racing Club have abandoned the 17th March for their meeting. What a chance this is for the Marton Athletic Club to have sports ! It is to .be hoped someone will call a meeting. Mr Beckett has a lot of stock entered for his sile there on the 31st January. A splendid chance is offered for anyone wishing to start in the grocery business. A suitable bnsiness is offered in a rising township. Mr Thomas Thilrlow, who has been an invalid for some considerable time, and I tried the Wanganni Hospital for a cure, has ] d.cidedto go to Wellington and try for: results. ' The residents in the Pukeokahu and Pnkerua Blocks have petitioned the Government for a bi-weekly mail service, i The amplication is a just one, as the place i is well settled, and from what I hear there is every prospect of it being granted. Under the auspices of the New Zealand | Alliance, Miss Kirk will deliver addresses ' in the Theatre Royal, Marton, on February 2nd and 3rd, and Sunday, the 6th. The critical state of Mrs F. Hunt's health is causing anxiety to her fiiends and family. A cab c was yesterday sent to her son in Australia informing him of her condition. The attendance at the public school during the last few years shows a lamentable falling uff. Some three years ago the number on the roll was nearly 350, while at the preseut time it is under 275. Some I attribute it to the decreased population of the town, while others inclit.e to the opinion that it is the improved condition of the private schools. The Liverpool r ondon and Globe (Mr Ross, agent) havo prumptly settled Mr Bartlott's claim of .£260 on his recent lire. Mr Parkinson, weather permitting, will have his trial of the Noxon icaper aud biudcr on Tliursday next.

A Cadet Corps has been formed and has ' applied to the Government for recognition. As yet, however, no reply has been received. The Corps have elected their officers as follows : -Captain, E. Woolby ! Lieutenant, J. D. Anderson aud S. Prince ; Sergeants, E. Gordon and C. Lound ; Corporals A. Billeus aud George Doers; Bugler, ,1. Tennent. Captain Batten and Li.ut. Hilton, of the Royals, are really the promoters of the Corps, and will give them every assistance at drills, the lirst ot which will take place on Wednesday next, at 4 o'clock.

Mr Artuhr Ncsbit, of Silverhope, had the misfortune to lose his son Leslie, aged 5 years, by beinc drowned in a dam tnis morning. The little fellow had been fishing, and had some time previously taken an eel ho had caught fco showhismother.and returning, ho must have almost immediately fallen in. When the mother misted him and made search his little body was seen in the gravel pit. Mr W. W. 'I ay lor rescued the body with all promptness, but in his evidence at the inquest held by Major Ross, coroner, saitl it was quite cold wheu ho got it out. Dr Smith was soon in attendance, but pronounced life extinct. The funeral leaves the parents' residence at 3 o'clock for tho Upper Tutaenui Cemetery, where the service will be conducted by the Rev. D. Gordon. To the parents, in their sad bereavement, we echo tbe symjathy of their large circle of friends.
