A Master Fined for Assault. (Per Pbe3s Association) Auckland, December 22. At the Polica Court-, BHis, head-master of the Kichmond Boad School, was fined 20e and costs for assault on a child nine year.3 old, a. pupil in the Hchool. Me Hutchison, S.M., in giving his deI ciaion, said fche law and Board's regulations sllowad a miFtur to punish children and the amount of pnnishmant wa3 left to the mastor'e discretion; but the Board's regulations stated that corporal punishment should be giyen sparingly. In this case he thought tho caning administerad was diaproport ; onate to the offence and ia excess of what the law ; allowed. He found that the punishment wa3 given by the matter without any display of temper or p-qae. Counsel for defendant asked the Magistrate to make the fine £5, so that an appeal could ba taken fc> the Sapreme Court, as the qaestiou was an important one for teachers, They wished generally to get tho judgment of the Sapreme Court as to whether the punishment was reasonable or not and whether the evidence of persona who did not see the punishment idmiaißtered sbonld be takin. Ihe Magiatratn aaid ha would consider the que.-tion of appeal.
