THE REFEREE'S TEAM.

1 (By "Bhjedottle.") The following players will represent tha Referees' Association it their match against tho team arranged by Mr A. C. Hogg on Saturday afternoon next. A few remarks about each of the. players will no doubt be interesting : — ; J. W. Emmerson.-— At one time a member of the Clapton and London Welsh Clubs. Played full for the South of England versus north. Since his arrival in New Zealand, has represented Wnnqanni for sovoral yoavs. In' training for the sprint events at the next championship meeting. F. W. Mason.— Once known to fame as the " Demon Place-kick." Used to practice plaoc-kicking through a window. Played full-back for Wanganni against tho English team, and at three quarter several times since. D. Coghill.— Captain of tho Waverley Club in their good days, when the forwards could dribble and the backs kick. Can still kick something under a hundred yards. W. Hall.— Played for the Kaikorai Olub at one time we believe. Slashing forward, something after the style of a Sammy Woods. Can also kiok like a— mule, H. W. Pownal!.- Played for the Wellington Club when at their best, and has since represented this district against Manawatu. With fifty yards ntart he can't be oaught over a football ground. J. M. Marshall, — Has made his mark in many games. Canterbury and Wanganui, F. Purnell.— Knows how to run a Rugby Union as well as play " Bugger." One of the band of heroes who invaded the Wairarapa in '93. A. D. Thomson.— The worthy President of tho Uuion. In liis best days the finest three-quarter in tho colony. A regular " Artful- Dodgor." Has represented Manawatu and Wellington. Distinguished himself in the Wellington matches with the English team. H. Gibbons,— An old Taranaki representative. Scorog every time he plays, and on Saturday will take a lot of watching. J. Harold.— U3od to play regularly with the Wanganui Club and the Collegiate School a few years ago. A very hard man to stop, and a likely scoring man. W. H. McLean.— Played in first rep. match against the English team in '88. Has represented Wanganui on sixteen different occasions. Captained the combined team against New South Wales team. Is known as the father of the Kaieraus. H. Townsend.— Formerly played with Poncke Club. Used to bo a splendid long range place kick, and his effort in the Taranaki match in '89 will not soon be forgotten. Also a member of tho team against the English. Showed the famous Black-, heath Club a few wrinkles late'y. A. Gray. — Has basn going to knock off forJ2o years, but still keeps at it. Used to play threequarter, but now performs among the pushers in the front. Has represented- WanK&tmi fully v, dozsn times. D. Blair —Made his dchd against Taranaki in '89, and is Btil 1 a familiar figure on local enclosures. Played in the combined team against New South Wales. ft. Brown.— A reaj "hummer." Promised atone time to roach intercolonial standard, but suddenly dovolopad a " leg."
