V.R.C. AUTUMN MEETING.

FIBS I' DAY. Vsn Fimss Association.) Mhlbours b, March 1. The weather was gloriously fino for the opining day of the V.E.C. autumn meeting, yet it failed to attract more than the average attendance. The racing throughout; was good, but the downfall of two pronounced favourites like Wallace and Hova caused a feeling of dissatisfaction amongst punters. In Wallace's case it was considered that the 1 jockey threw away whatever chance the colt had by laying so far behind Cabin Boy. He was evidently intent on watching Waterfall, andthus allowed the letter's BtaMe companion to steal a march on him. Quiver's party did not support her to any extant. The tremendous form which Hova had displayed on the training track made backers feel that the result of the Esßendon Stakes was a foregone conclusion, but Quiver won very easily; and it iB thought ebo possesaes a good chance in Champion Stakes. It is also thought I that after the running of Disfigured in the Brunswick Stakes may prefer Damien's chance in the Australian Ocp, Besults:— Hopeful Stakbs, 7 furlonga. Aroba + Sayles „, , t The Black Book ... 3 The other starters were—Resolute, Strathspy, Crease, Cohort, Not row, Goat of Arms, Batboca, Posy, Arajoel, Kaagalandi, Ammunition, Grafin, Keeojution, Fitzgibbon and Bxohange. Betting—2 to 1 Aroha, 6 to 1 Cohort, 7to 1 Sayles and Grafin, 10 to 1 Nohow, KaugulaDdai and the Black Bock. When the barrier lifted Pitzgibbon ran the reverse way, Norrow dashed off in front followed by Qrafin and Cohort. At the dUtance post Say lea took command with The Black ■rook next, but tlia favourite was coming fast on the outside and just managed to get up and make a dead heat with Sayles, The Bla-k Rock a length away, followed followed by Ammunition, Resolution and Arajoel in tbat order, Coat of Arms whipping in. Time, lmin 4}sec. In the run off 2 to 1 was laid oa Aroba, who won by two lengths in lmin 4-j3ec. Sr. Lkqek Stakes, 1$ miles and 132 yards. Cabin Boy 1 Wallace 2 Waterfall 3 Other starters-Ilchester, O'Trigger, Kallara, Betting—2 to lon Wallace, 3 to 1 against Waterfall, 12 to 1 Ilchester, 20 to 1 Cabin Boy and O'Trigger. After one false start the field wora despatched evenly. Cabin Boy took command, Kallara lying second, after whom came Ilchester, Wallace, Waterfall and O'Trigger. The outsider improved his lead to 20 lengths as they turned out of tbe straight. Cough, on the favourite, never attempted to move until approaching the six furloDg post, and although Wallace trwerssd tho last threequarterß of a mile ifl lmin lS^sec, he suffered defeat by tbraaquait3w of a length, Waterfall 15 lengths away.
