The Wellington Education Board, in their annual report, complained that the Education Department had taken advantage of the epidemic of measles in tbe September quarter to save expenditure from tbe vote, and also of the small sum allocated to the board for building purposes. In an interview with a Times reporter, the Minister of Education says that by the Department adopting the working average the board has already got back more than it lost through the Ssptember quarter, and a further gain may be expected from the expiring quarter of the financial year. As to the buildiDg vote, Mr Beeves declares that Wellington has had more than its full share. Tho Gothic left Rio on Thursday for London. Chmstohurch, March 81. A strong southerly gale is blowiDg, and it is raining heavily. The weather is bitterly cold, and as a consequence the polo sports and cricket match Canterbury v. At the Labour Conference, the scheme for tho trades federation was drawn up, to be submitted to tbe various trades councils and labour unions in the colony. A recommendation was made that a labour life insurance scheme be initiated, also un accident insurance scheme, and a scheme .for starting co-operative industries by various unions. The sessions of the Auckland University opens on Monday. Mr B . M. Tubbs, the new classical professor; is herp< Mr Sesger, professor of mathematics, and Mr Egerton, English professor, are en route from London in tbo Aorang., and will arrive at the end of April, taking up work at once. Owing to the short interval the Professional Board decided not to appoint a substitutes. Professors Brown, Thorns, and Tubbs, baing the the staff till the arrival of the new masters. Mrs Sarah Kosie, aged 60, was taken to the hospital suffering horn phosphorus poisoniDg by swallowing match heads. She was under, treatment in the hospital five months ago, said to be Buffering from cancer. Owing to femoral pains, she is hardly responsible for her actions.
