SAD CALAMITY.
«, _ DEATH OF MR WALTER WHITEMAN. News was icceived in town yesterday by the local police to the effect that Mr Walter Whiteman, of Mangamahu, had been found dead in one of tho baths at Eotorua. The deceased, who is well known in Waaganui, had, we understand, been of indifferent health for some time, and went to Eotorua to recuperate. Directly the news was received here, Mr T. Lewis— brother-in-law of the deceased — who happened to be in town, was communicated with, and he at once set out to Mangamahu to communicate the sad tidings to Mr and Mrs Wbiteman and family. Wo beg to offer the bereaved parents our BinceresJ- sympathy in their loss.
Colonel Fox has roqupstod the Premior to relieve him from hie engagement as Commandant on April 18th. A case of poisoning through eating unwholesomo tinned fish occurred in I'ahiotua recently (says tho local Herald). Messrs Madder and Dool and Mr Madder s ton, who live together noar tho Bfaiipasainoka Kiver, made thoir toa ono ovonnig off sardines. Mr Doel nud young Mndder dividing one tin botweon thorn, Mr Madder drawing his supply from nnothnr. At tho time young Madder noticed a peculiar tasto, and mentioned tho fact, but nothing was thought of it llien. Mr Madder iinmodiatoly rushed oB for Dr Gault, who was spoodily in attendance accompanied by Mr HacVott. Both patients displayed all the symptoms of poisoning, and emetics and antidotes wore at once administered. For some time the case looked very serious indeed, but finally the two were pulled round and declared out of danger. Both, however, continued vomiting during the night, and were reducod to a very weak state, Mr Madder, who had partaken of fi«h from another tin, was not affected.
