TREATY OF WAITANGI.

Sir Walter Buller, who is taking much interest in the " Treaty of Waitangi " painting, Gends us the paragraph below: " The British Australasian of May 4th has the folio-wing:— ' A committee is being formed in Auckland for the purpose of promoting the painting of an historical picture on a large scale "(20 fuet by 15 feet), representing the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. Sir George Grey, Sir Robert Stout, Sir Walter Butler, the lata Premier (Mr Ballance), and other men of note, figure as the patrons, Lord Glasgow and Sir John Thurston, Governor' of Fiji, have been asked, and consented to head the list of patrons, and subscription lints are being: opened all over the colony. All subscribers of a guinea each will be entitled to a photo engraving of the original, of fair dimenBionß, with the text of the Treaty in English and Maori attached, and the painting itself will be placed in the Library of the House of at ■Wellington. Mr Steele, a well-known artist, has been engaged for the work, and it is said that mans of the leading Maori chiefs are becoming subscribers. Mr Henry T. Kemp, who was present at the signing of the Treaty, and who afterwards made the first complete copy fcr Downing-street under the personal supervision of the Governor, Captain Hobson, and who also 30 years or more ago was Native Secretary and Commissioner, is acting as Honorary Secretary at Auckland, and from him any further particulars can bo obtained. As there are probably many old colonists in tbis country who would be glad to possess so interesting a souvenir, we beg to state tbat we shall be glad to receive at this office the names and addresses of any intending subscribers. If an historical picture of the kind indicated is to be made at all, the business ought to be delayed no longer, as nearly all the participators in the Waitangi Treaty have already gone ovar to the majority.' "
