SERIOUS COACH ACCIDENT.

* (Per Press Association.) Wellington, July 19. The postal authorities have received information from the Lyell (near Beef ton) of a serious accident which occured to the mail coach, running between the Lyell and Enefton. The coach was driven by Jon6s, with the following passengers : —Mr and Mrs Mitchell, Mes3rs Burly and tno sons, Glenny, Cummins, and Dixon. 'I he coach left the Lyell yesterday afternoon, and on reaching Bed Jacket's portion of the mail, the bank gave way, letting down the bind wheel, and tha coach was precipitated over a bank, a distance of ISO fuet, on to the edge of the Buller river. When the accident occurred, the king-bolt came out, and the driver escaped ty being pulled over the front of the coach by the team, Jones then hastened to- thg nearest station for assistance, and a conveyance, but no medical man being available, a doctor was sent for from Westport. Mr Mitchell was knocked about the head and face, being hardly recognisable, and partly insensible. Mrs Mitchell's back was injured very seriously, and she has completely lost the use of her legs. Mr Glonny had a leg broken, and was much knocked about. Mr Dixon had a leg and arm broken, besides being a good deal knocked about. Mr Cummins had a bruised arm, sprained or broken, and a bad woun't about the head. Beefton, July 19. All those injured in the coach accident have been removed to the Lyell, where they are being attended by Dr Gaze of Westport. The coach is now at the bottom of the cliff, on the river tea:h, and bat little damaged. Dr Gaze reports hopefully on the case of Mrs Mitchell, who was most injured. The escape of the passengers from instant death is regarded as wonderful.
