THE FRENCH CANADIAN GEALER.

Committed for Manslaughter: A charge of manslaughter preferred against Paul Dußot, the " French Canadian healer" — whos» Auckland experiences will be remembered — was heard at Warrnambool, Victoria, recently. Accused was arre3ted at Caitlem*ine on warrant issued at Warrnambool at the instance of the Crown Law department on the depositions taken at the inquest on Mary Gardiner, though the jury had not found any charge against him. Before the opening of the case, the Crown Prosecutor said he regretted that the police had arrested the accused before a crowd of people, but that the authorities had taken action that the accused could be tried as so»n as possible, because the courts in this district were held so infrequently. He contended that accused had not only accelerated death, but had absolutely caused it. Evidence was given by Emma H. Gardiner that on the 27th March her mother had consulted the accused, who bad guaranteed to cure her for £5. He supplied her with a bottle of medicine and some ointment, and two days aftei wards she began Yomitipg, etc,, but continued taking the medicine for nine days, when she again nonsuited accused, and he gave her two boxes of pills. She rapidly became worse, and died on the 29th of April. Witness' mother had previously been attended by three local doctors. The pnliVo magistrate considered that a pnnwfacv: cvtehad boen made out, and committe'l • ecusod tor trial at Warnambool on Blh August. Bail was allowed. _^______^_
