PATEA NOTES.

SCHOOL ENTERTAINMENT. (B n uosj Ocb Own Correspondent.) Patea, August 10. The second entertainment in aid of the School funds (by request) took place last evening, and was a great success. , The tableaux given on last occasion were repeated, and even better results were obtained, An exbra tableaux of " Mary Queen of Scots " was given in a very effective manner. Wben all the tableaux were so good it would be difficult to particularise, but possibly "The Curfew Bell," " The Gipsy Encampment " and the first scene iu " Mary Queen of Scots " were the best productions. Miss Sherwood recited '■ Mary Queen of Scots " in an admirable manner — emphatically, aud with good intonation and excellent illustrative capacity. Mis3 Gower. too, repeated the " Curfew Bell " even better than on the last occasion. The Toy Band was the delight of the youngsters, and they performed their part in a highly amusing manner. Amongst the fresh songs must be placed in order of merit Miss Atkiis' "The Mighty Deep," and Mr Atkins' " The Warrior Bold," both of whom received well -deserved encores. Misses Bl'iclc and Atkins in the duet " The Lily aud the Rose " were very successful, and it was pleasantly sung. " The Old Rustic Bridge," by Mr &.. Sergeant, with chorus, was a. taking item. MrJ. Power's song was well given. MissMjnk's song, " Scarlet Poppies," was not so successful as some former songs. A Sailors' Hornpipe, by Mr Soddard, was well performed and encored, and Miss E. Gibbons' song, " The Wearing of the Green," was well received. In th« interval his Worship the Mayor, in«a neat and appropriate speech, presented (o 1 behalf of the Fire Brigade) medals to Lieutenant C. Ashby, for flvo years' service, aud to Branchinan Carey, for Reven years' service. The recipients were heartily applauded. The management of the performance must again bo congratulated on the success attending their efforts to provide so good an entertainment — notably Miss Allen, and Messrs Denne and Dearsly. I hope it may not be the last occasion of the sort.
