ALLEGED BREACH OF PACKET LICISNSE. Alexander Chambers, master of the s.s. Stotmbird, was charged with a breach of his packet license by selling liquor to L. K. Batkin whilst his vessel was at the wharf, the said L. B. Batkin not being a passenger on board. Sergeant-Major Anderson prosecuted and Mr Hogg defended. Sergeant-Major Anderson, sworn, said he was in the cabin of the Stormbird and caw Mr Batkin receiving 18s Gd change from the mate, whom Mr Batkin had said he had " shouted " for. He did not see Mr Batkin pass any money for liquor, but saw the change being (given and the liquor bottle and liquor standing on the table. h. E. Batkin deposed that no liquor at all was served to him He had a drink of lime juice and soda with the steward, but no money was paid. The steward of the Stormbirri corrobsratod the statement of the last witness. Mi- Hogg submitted that there was no case to answer, as there was no evidence to show that any liquor had been sold. The case was dismissed. A similar charge of selling liquor to T. F. Drummond was also hoard. Evidence was given, and the case was dismissed. ALLEGED ASSAULT. William Lambert was charged with un - lawfully assaulting Joseph Charles Kennerly on the 11th inst. at Bastown. Mr ■Marshall appeared for the informant and Mr Hogg for the defendant. The case was one of a most perplexing charactor, so far as the evidence was concerned. The informant, and his mother and brother, deposed that the defendant had assaulted the first mentioned without any provocation whatever ; but their statements were denied absolutely by defendant and his wife. In the face of testimony of this character the case had of r,our3e to be dismissed. DRUNKENNESS, A man arrested for drunkenness at Hunterville, on the Gfch instant, was convicted and discharged, having already been in custody six days.
