DUNEDIN ITEMS.
[Per United Press Association.] Dunedin, July 31. At a meeting of the Harbour Board the question of providing ie venue by means of a district rate, in lieu of the harbour improvement rate and wharfage, was remitted to the Finance Committee. There is no question at present of making a change, but as the matter has been frequently reported outside the members thought it desirable to have all details to hand. Tho report of G. W. Barr, Civil Engineer, on the breach in the sand hills and St. Clair seawall has been received. He points out that the break in the natural barrier may be the cause of a serious disaster over a wide area. In eight years the beach has lowered considerably and there is no indication of its making. He considers that the danger between St. Clair and Mussleburgh may be averted at a cost of .£IOO. As to St. Clair he submits seven different proposals, the cost ranging from X2500 downwards. The Mayors of tho three boroughs have decided to recommend a scheme of rubble wall with roadways, at a cost of .£llBO.
