THE HOLIDAYS.

TO THB EDIXOB. Biß,—-By an advertisement in your J paper I see that soma of the business I people intend to open their shops on Tuesday, thereby making the day a sort of half and half affair. Various excuses are adduced for doing so. One says he is doingf it for the benefit of the country people ; another that the Mayor did not ask him to olose ; and another that he " took £§0 on one holiday/' What bosh ! There is nothing to induce country people to come to town ; the Mayor invited everyone to keep the holiday; and the £50 yarn is too thia. Christmas comes but onee a year, and the least our employers can do is to give us the full benefit of what holidays there are to be had. PJo doubt in these hard times every shilling has to be carefully nursed; but who Is there in Wanganui that oannot do their shopping on Saturday night ? Is our floating population so large that we cannot close our shops for a couple of days ? If I thought it would be a serious loss to my boss to shot, I would willingly work; but in this oase I cannot foretell any loss, and after "grafting" all tbe year I am very thankful for the e_ftra day. My boss eays he will shut whoever keeps open, and I shall respect him and work all the harder for it. The " principal" business people who started the agitation to keep open on Tuesday are apt to pose as " the working man's friend" when occasion suits. They are showing their friendship now by keeping their employes shut up al). day while other people are enjoying themselves. Holidays in Wanganui are generally inter*** ferred with by certain malcontents, and I think my fellow employes would agree with me to have some of the useless half-holidays done away with, and get two or three pqn3epi|tive days once a year. ' I trust "that ihe good people of Wanganui will do all their shopping on Saturday, and let those who open on Tuesday stand behind their counters all clay and . look at one another doing nothing. I have got my holiday, and can sympathise with those who have j neiv-lam, &0., Employe, j
