THE WANGANUI SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The usual monthly meeting of this oommittee was held yesterday afternoon, at the Borough Council Chambers, Present — Messrs Borlaee (chairman), Eyre, Spurdle, Cummins, and Laird, jInfant School Picnic— Letter froSi Mrs Hoey, enclosing £2 10a, balanoe from the late Infant Sohool pionio, which she wished devoted to the pay* ment for work being done at the school. It was agreed that there was sufficient i uucis available for the purpose, and that the money should be returned to Mn Hoey, with a request that ehe retain it as a nucleus for a prize fund at the end of the year, KEsiGtfATioN.—Letter of resignation from Mr E. H. Bogers, of the Boys' oohool, ha having been appointed to Jaokeytown. Testimonial Qbantsd.— Letter from Mr Woodhatu, second master at the Boys Sohool, stating that he intended applying for the headmastership of the Foxfcou School, and asking for a testimonial from the committee.— Agreed to. Attendance Beturwts,— The return* tor January were read as follows:— Boya' School, on roll, 280 ; highest attendance, 247; average, 233. Girls' School, on roll, 279; highest attend•iace, 250 ; average, 228. Infant School, highest attend mcc, 291 ; average, 257. St. John's, on roll, 76 ; highest attendance, 73 ; average, 68. The Boys' School.— The Obairmaa said that Mr Kennerly had complained that Mr Fenn had kept his boy in school during the dinner hour. A memo, from Mr Fenn stated that the boy had bean kept in five miuutes, and had remained for a longer period of hit owu free will Mr Laird said the crime *- was just the same whether Mr Fenn kept tha boy in five miuutes or longer; - as it was against the instructions of th£%i committee.— Mr Oummins thought tt".^ a very trivial complaint to trouble the x committee with. St. John's School.— MrLaird moved, Chat the Chairman, aud Messrs Laird, Syre, and dpurflle be appointed to select a site for a new sohool at St. John's, aad that applicition be made to the board to apply the interest accruing on the Jieea bequest to the pvrpose. — Mr Spurdle said he thought if they were warranted in having a new scjjooi at St. John's it was the duty of the board to build the school out of their ordinary buildiug fund. Hs thought the . board had dona quite right ia funding the _ frees bequest money, as is would be awch better to appropriate it for a High School or for scholarships. As for Bt. John's, the increaae at it and at the fnfant School was very large lately, and chere was ground enough to go upon in epproaching the board again, — Mr Oummins quite agreed with the necessity for better accommodation at hi. John's, but ne objected to ask the board to apply the &ees bequest to such a purpose.^ Eventually Mr L.aird withcliew his motion, aud moved instead, That the Chairman, , I and Messrs spurdle, Oummius, aud tha mover be a deputation tc waic upon the board at its next meeting to place before it the claims of St. John's School.
