TO THE ELECTORS OF THE WAITOTARA DISTRICT. GENTLEMEN,— I beg to announce myVJ self a Candidate for the representation of your district at the General Election which is understood to be at hand. I am in favour of a speedy completion of those public works already begun and such others as are necessary for opening up the country. The views of the leading members of tae former Ministry, now in opposition, to the effect that the further progress of the North Island Trunk Bailway should be suspended until native territory on both sides con be purchased, appear to me fraught with the utmost danger to the best interests of the Colony. To allow such views to prevail would practically be to abandon the undertaking. Under the preeent Native admimstra' ion, which marks a distinct advance in bringing about a renewed feeling of friendliness with the Maoris, the acquisition of the land, already proolaimed beyond the reach o. | gpeculation, may as confidently be reckoned upon as if already under contract of sale. The completion of the railway Byetem, the settlement of the land, and the necesoary intercommunication by roads, are works which promise a return more than sufficient to justify a vigorous effort iv further colonization, more especially at a time when public loans oan be floated ou the most favourable terms. This means, instead of raising a million a year indefinitely, that the Colony should arrange to borrow sufficient within a short period to give effect to such a policy. Among other re'orms, a more equitable distribution o£ the burdens of taxation should not longer be deferred. Further retrenchment in the Public Service should also be reßolutely followed up. As the time for the election draws nearer the opportunities that are usual of meeting electors in publio will be more appropriate than the limits of this address for the discussion of many other subjects proper for consideration in the choice of a repreaentas tive. Referring only generally for the present to such matters, I would, if elected, be found supporting a policy of progress, while giving my best attention to the special requirements of the district. I may be pardoned for referring in a few words to your present member. It is to be desired on every ground that Mrßryce may be able to be present at the eleotiou. Hia absence would be embarrassing, and could be of no service to others in the field. For my part I hope he may soon return, having successfully completed the business which has called him away. I have the honour to be, Gentlemen, Your Obedient Servant, GEORGE HUTCHISON. February 8, 1886. «■ j SPECIAL REDUCTIONS. JOB.
