ANNUAL MEETING OF THE ALEXANDRA CAVALRY.

At the annual meeting of this popular truop, to be held tonight, the following t report will be presented : — t Report. ( Captain Semnaerville, Officers, and I | Gentlemen of the Alexandra Cavalry. — * In presenting you with my annual re- * port ani balance-sheet, I regret that I am unable to show such a satisfactory result of the year's business as I did on the Uat occasion when we met together for this purpose. However, by a careful perusal of the accounts the reason will be made obvious to you. We started the past year with a credit balance of £122 6s 3d, which under any ordinary circumstances would have been sufficient to carry us througb the year without having recourse to an overdraft. On comparing notes on both sides of the general account, yon will observe that the Nelson trip cost the troop £ L 54 7s, while the receipts were only £95 14s, thereby incurring a loss of £58 l§s, which certainly mars to a preat extent the pleasure connected with ihe visit. I cannot let this matter drop without saying a few words on the subject. It does seem very hard to think that a corp?, romposed of men of whom the dittriofcahas every reason to be proud, should be obliged to oripplo its funds (without saying anything about the personal expense to members) in a cause which is o( great gain to anyone in particular, .but rather to the colony of Kew Zealand ,as a whole. I therefore say thit the Government should deal more liberally with the Volunteer cause at large throughout th 6 colony. You will alfioobserve that the ctpitrttiou grant this yenr is nearly £100 less than that of last year, although we again have the pleasure of recording thai", we have gained capitatiou for the full number, viz., 63, for which I thiuk tho Alexandra Cavalry deserve veiy great credit. Not* withstanding the deficiencies I have mentioned, I still look forward to a brilliant future for our corpi, which we one and all make such an ilolof. I think you, gentlemen, will boar me oui ; n my remarks when you ftl-moe over our liabilities and assets, the former of which are reduced, I may say, to a minimum, while tho latter are i atiniated at an exceedingly low rate. There is one item which I have omitti-d in thii account It is & claim upon the owners of the Oreli for detention of time, and who have offered the sum of five pounds to settle , the claim. lam not . going to make a very lengthy rop'ort, a& I must say that my time duriug the past, few weeks has not altogether been my own, which has bad the effect of my not having been able to do so well in this respect as I would have wished. However, gentlemen, I think you will do me the^ credit of thinking that I have rendered a good account of my stewardship. In conclusion, I desire to r j thank the officers and members of the 1 ; troop for the very courteous manner iv which they have treated me during the ft three successive terms I have held the r office of secretary and treasurer of the 3 Alexandra Cavalry. I wish also to state that I shall not seek re-election at your hands, owing to my time being now re» quired in the circles of my business, but would respectfully ask you (in retiring from the office I have held for three years, with a consciousness of having done my duty to the troop) to favour me with a seat on the council of the 0 troop, as I still wish to take aa interest a in all measures which may be brought v forward for the welfare of the troop. a * Again thanking you all for your kind 8 assistance and courteous behaviour to- , wards me, and the great confidence you 1 have always placed in me during my q terms of offioe, I now beg. leave to place my resignation as hon. secretary and g treasuter in your hands. — I have, &c, y Peter D. Hogg.
