THE PEMBERTON SPECIAL SETTLEMENT.
The secretary, Mr R. T. Davis, of the Pemberton Special Settlement, haa roooived the following communication from the Unrlor-Secrotary of Lands. As the lotter clears up soveral hitherto doubtful points wo publish it in full. A meeting of the oommittee is to be held on Friday evening at the office of the president, Mr D. Eyre : —
Sir, — I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your lotter of the 28th May, transmitting a list of members, and a copy of the rules of the association. In reply I am to inform you that the rules have been approved by the Minister of Lands. It is observed that the names of some women appear on the list of members. If these are the wives of settlers it will be necessary for the association to obtain members in their place to bring the number up to 60, as married women are not eligible as settlors in special settlement blooks. As the average holdings of each person in a settlement must not exceed 100 aores, and as the number of members is taken at 69, the block will have to contain a net area of 6,000 acres, to which may be added the town and suburban sections, equal to an additional five acres. Should the association wish a town to be laid out at the same time as the rural sections the total area of the block for 69 settlers would be 7,245 acres. Before tenders are invited by tho Government it will be necessary for the association to pay the first instalment of sevenpen.oe 'half-, penny (7£d) per acre; amounting to £226 8s l£d on the 7,2-15 acres, to the Keceiver of Land Revenue at Wellington, and further undertake to pay the balance of two shillings and sixpence ) (2a 6d) per acre at intervals of three i months, or as the work progresses, according to Rule 5 of the Special Settler meat Regulations. — I have, &o ,
H. W. Knott, Under-Seoretary. General Crown Lands Office,
