WELLINGTON.
February 28. The barque Electra arrived at Nelson, after a passage of 112 days from London. The Oamaru has arrived at Port Chalmers. ' The Government have suspended Whitelaw, the Superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum, pending the result of the enquiry. Mr W. H. Hales, Resident Engineer at Wellington, proceeded to Auckland in the Tararua, to take over the duties of the engineer of the Auckland district. Complaints are being made here that the broad supplied by the bakers is frequently under weight. Mr S. Cobham, surveyor, died at Kaiwarra, aged 81 . He had been many years in the colony. There is a rumour in town to-day that a trial crushing of stone from the Albion Company's reef showed from 4J to 5 ozs gold to the ton. The reef was struck on Saturday in a 12-foot drive, and found to be four feet thick. It is understood that the whole of the shares in the Phoenix Company were not taken up on Saturday night. A few still remain unallotted.
