GRAVEL FOR THE BOROUGH.
In accordance with a resolution passed on Thursday night empowering a committee of the Council to proceed to Matarawa to view the gravel pits in that locality, his Worship the Mayor, accompanied by Crs Hurley, Willis, Pollock, Carson, Nathan, and the Foreman of Works, left town by the first train yesterday morning, and leaving the train at the Matarawa station at once proceeded to a pit on the land of Mr William Burr, which upon examination they found to be unsuitable, the gravel being of inferior quality, and there being an excess of clay. Mr Burr stating that he was unaware of the existence of any better quality in the neighbourhood, it was decided to move further on, and leaving Mr Burr's land the Committee proceeded on foot along the railway line a distance of three miLs to a gravel pit at Cherry Bank, the property of Mr John McGregor, which had been opened up and used for road purposes for some time past. The Committee found that the gravel was of good quality, and the pit an easy one to work and in close proximity to the railway line ; but after some deliberation ou the terms proposed by Mr McGregor, who had offered the use of a pit covering an area of over two acres for the sum of £450, the Committee came to the conclusion that gravel might be obtained nearer to town on equally I advantageous forms. This decision being unanimous, the Committee returned to town. During the afternoon tlte Mayo waited upon Mm Hair, and we under*
stand concluded an arrangement in every way satisfactory with regard to the 1 grayel on the land ..of that lady. The 1 par|icalacß. .•'will^ye believe, be laid be- '. forpthejejhergejiicy meeting called for thirafteifrioon. ! , l ' <
