COLLISION BETWEEN THE STEAMERS GO-AHEAD AND HUIA OFF OHAU POINT.

(New Zealander.) On the arrival of the steamer Go-Ahead from Wanganui yesterday morning it was seen that she had been in collision with something. On inquiry we were informed that when off OhauPoint a collision between the steamers Huia aud Go- Ahead took place. The Go- Ahead left Wanganui at 5 p.m. on Saturday, and at 3.20 a.m. yesterday, when about two miles north of Ohau Point, a Bteamer was seen approaching. The GoAhead at the time was under the charge of \ the second mate, and on his seeing the Bteamcr's mast-head and side light he ported the helm so as to clear the vessel, bnt observing that the other vessel was steering as if to cross their bows, he immediately called the captain. On the captain coming on deck he at once gave the order " Pull speed astern," as the vessels were near each other, and it waa the only course open to avoid a collision. Tbe order was at once obeyed, and when the Go-Ahoad was going astern, the other vessel, which proved to be the steamer Huia, from Wellington to Wanganui, struck the Go-Ahead on the port bow, starting the covering board, and doing other damago to the bulwarks. The Huia, after getting clear from the Go-Ahead, proccedod on her voyage, and the Go-Ahead did likewise, alter finding that she had ieceived no damage below water-line. We are informed that the collision would not have occurred had the captain of the Huia caused his helm to bo Btarboarded. The amount of damage done to the Go- A head is very small, but that done to the Huia is not known, as those on board the Go-Ahoad called to hor but received no answer. No doubt an inquiry will bo held as to the circumstances connected with tha sollision, when full particulars will be learnt.
