Todd. i •■ ••' ; ; ' 1 The Chairman stated that tha meeting" badTjeen called, to. consider several nibtions of which; notice had been given ■ by ' the -members o£ the Board. ■..■■■•■> i ! . . Mr Duthie asked leave to withdraw the : motion of which he' had' given notice/re deferring theacceptance of any tender for I No. 1 Contract, pending further £on3ulta- | tian with the Engineer. ' • r ; i [ Leave was granted. ' ••■ • •■ ' Mr Tod moved the motion standing in his 1 name— viz., " That the staff at the' Heads be reduced by one hand.'' Mr Duthie .seconded the motion. Mr. Tod and His Worship the Mayor opposed it. 1 ' ' i After considerable discussion the'md- 1 tian was put and declaredto be carried. Mr M'Arthur, the Sub-Agent of the Fielding Corporation, was introduced to the meeting by Mr Duthie. Mr M'Arthur stated thai his object Jn., waiting upon the Board, was to ask their co-operation in the matter of making roads through the Manchester Block, which, lie said, would enhance the value of the Board's reserve as well as the property of ' the Corporation. He had no doubt if. this was represented to the Waste Lands; Board, as it had the power of selling the reserve, it would have the desired: effect, of having roads made through the block. If the Board spent 15s an acre upon the block, it would sell at 30s an acre better than at the present, time. The Chairman thanked Mr M'Arthur for his attendance, and he, then withdrew. Mr Tod moved—" That the Pilot and Harbor Master be relieved of his duty as Harbor Master, and the whole of his time be devoted to the duties connected with the Pilot Department. He thought that the only obstacle in the way of the Pilot being relieved of the duties of Harbor Master, as he proposed, and being left entirely to the management of affairs at the Heads, was that the Harbor Master would be over the "Pilot in authority. He did not care to bring about any change that wculd affex?t the standing of Captain M'Laren,. who, was an old and efficient servant of the .Board. , Mr J. P. Watt moved, and Mr Duthie seconded, as an amendment, "That. the Pilot and Harbor Master continue his office as hitherto ; but that a Deputy Harbor Master be appointed, whose duty shall be the berthing oE vessels, looking after and keeping in repair the Bridge and Wlmrves, attending the spit, raising snags, and generally to look after the interest of the Board." After considerable discussion, the amendment was put and carried by the casting vote of the Chairmau. It having thus become an original motion, The Collector of Customs moved as an amendment, which was 'seconded: by Mr Morgan, " That the office of Pilot and Harbor Master be divided,, and the salaries for the respective duties, in future, be £250 and £175, and the choice. of the appointments be offered to Captain. M'Laren." Carried. Mr Peat moved, and Mr Morgan seconded, " That the duties of the* Harbor Master be the berthing of vessels, looking after and keeping in repair the Bridge and Wharves, attending to the South Spifc, the raising of snags, and generally to the interests of the Harboi 1 ." Carried. llesolved, "That Mr Law's tender for the small boat be accepted." | ■ The Board then went into committee to open tenders for the Harbor Works and the representatives of the Press were requested to withdraw.
