March 6. After three days' painful suspense, news was received iv Melbourne at an early

hour this morning as to the ultimate fate of the Gothenburg passengers. Only 22 ot the crew reached Port Demson, the remainder of those on board, numbering 9_ in all, perished. It transpired that on the fatal night of the 24th Februaiy, when a 1 hope of saving the vessel was abandoned, the boats were ordered to be got ready. Then there was a rush, and in a heavy sea they capsized. A few men got aWay in the lifeboat, which was damaged, and they are still) missing. Three men were picked ott Hoburn Island, wheie they had been subsisting on sea birds and shell fish. Ihe drowned includes Judge Werrin, his associate, and Crown Solicitor Hon. T. Reynolds, Dr Milner Wells, editor of the * Southern Territory Times,' and a number of women and children. Mr and Mrs Hart, late of New Zealand, are amongst the drowned The captain aud officers are all drowned with the engineers. The Normanby threw over a portion of her cargo. The schooner Kate Conley was stranded, and the crew rescued.
