AUCKLAND.
May 15. The hearing of the charge against Mr J. A. Macfarlane was continued to-day. Mr Rees, at the opening, asked Mr Buckland, M.H.R , whether it was true that Macfarlane had been a partner with him in certain land transactions during the past fortnight. Mr. Buckland declined to gratify his curiosity. It was also objected to both Justices that their Commissions of the Peace had lapsed through their uonattendance at two petty sessions during the year. The Justices ruled to sit. Mr Keddell, R,M., deposed that Mr Macfarlane sent him a letter while hearing the charge against Craig for presenting a revolver at Harris was pending, telling him to be cautious how he adjudicated on Craig. Mr Hesketh spoke two hours in defence, imputing vindictiveness and malice against Craig, contending that the statements of the witnesses for the prosecution were improbable and unreliable. At 2 o'clock the Court adjourned. Mr Macfarlane and Air Buckland dined together at Cunning's. On reassembling, the case was dismissed.
Two other charges against Mr Macfarlane will be heard ou Monday.
