THE CEMETERY.
(To the Editor of the, Chronicle.) Sib, — I notice a letter in your morning's issue, purporting to have been written by. the Secretary of the Cemetery Trustees, wherein he refers to the letter appearing in your' paper of the 28th ultimo, signed " Venerator of the Dead." The writer says the allegations are quite erroneous, and that the fence enclosing the General Cemetery has been examined and found to be fenced in thorough repair &c, I believe (he states) as much cannot be said of the Jewish Burial Ground, which I am informed is open to the incursions of cattle, horses &c. Sir, what are the people of Wanganui to, deduce from such illogical reasoning ? It appears to be a distinction without a difference. There are, I believe, four cemeteries viz., -r-tKe \ Public, Catholic, Church of England and Jewish, and surely the claims, privileges, and protection to the interred are equal. I may | state that the enclosure known as the Jewish \is a two rail live fence with iron gates. All this was done by private and public subscription. It is well known that horses and cattle did break into and enter the cemetery.- Mr Budge, the sexton, watched for the animals, and although seen by others early in ihe | morning and late in the eyeing, was unable jto discover them. The rail has since been j repaired and made secure. Doubtless the . same animals would, if opportunity offered,' ' have entered the other cemetery. ' * ' ! It matters but little, whether it be the General, Catholic, Church of England, or Jewish which is desecrated, they being the great Necropolis. Peace to their ashes. — I am, &c, W. JR.. G. Samuels, Trustee Jewish Cemetery. , May 7. «. •
