WELLINGTON.
April 29. Re initiating a system of Storai Signals by the Commissioner of Customs, the requisite instructions were taken for the North Island to-day by the 'Lady Bird.' The whole scheme is expected to be in working order early next month. The Provincial Government land sale realised £7,458. The Wanganui land averaged i>3 per acre ; the Masterton, £3 10s; some of the Palmerston sections fetched £30 per half acre. Net result that the land fetched over 20 per cent more than upset price. The Provincial Council will be opened to-morrow by the Superintendent at three o'clock. The speech is reported to be an unusually long one.
