RESIDEN T MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Monday, March 16. [Before His Honor Major Edwards, R.VI.] DRUNK. William Ellis, charged by Constable Ooakley with being drunk and disorderly at Campbelltown on the 15fch inst., was fined 10s, with the alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment. LAKCBNY. Michael Burke was brought up, charged with stealing a number of articles of wearing apparel and bedding, the property of John William Jackson, toll-keeper at the Bridge. ® Charlotte Jackson, wife of J. W. Jackson, stated that on Saturday last, prisoner was iv an outhouse at the back of the toll-gate ; he was asleep. Witness went to tell her husband, and when she returned the prisoner had gone. Witness identified the articles as the property of her husband. They consisted of one pair of boots, one pair of trousers, one bed co/er, one bag, one sheet, &c. They were all in the shed where prisoner was lying. Valued the lot at £2 10s. Janet Broughtoh, wife of Samuel Broughton, identified the prisoner as having come to her hotel on Saturday tind sold her the boots produced for ss. Alexander McKenzie, police constable, deposed to having arrested the prisoner in an empty house in Mr Chadwick's pound. He had a bag at the time containing several of the stolen articles. Had since recovered the rest of them. Prisoner, in defence, said he had been working about the country and had never got into trouble before. He had been drinking in town and did not know what he was doing. His Worship -sentenced the prisoner to four months' imprisonment with hard labour. The Court then rose.
