THE MANAWATU PURCHASE.

A letter printed in Maori, with the following translation, appears in the Canterbury 4 Press’ of the Bth inst. :

6th June, 1866.

To Mr. Fitz Gerald .—l have only just, see what Tamihana te Rauparaha had said in the newspaper, that I asked Dr, Featherston for money for Rangitikei. This assertion of Tamihana’s is quite false. It was for another piece of land—Eketahuna is the name—at Ruamahanga, near Wairarapa. The person who is offering that land for sale is Peti. This is the land about which I spoke to Dr Featherston; that land is not near Rangitikei j that land is 100 miles distant from Rangitikei ; this is what Tamihana has misrepresented. When he sold Mana, did he say the money was for Kapiti ? When he sold land on the Middle Inland, did he say the money was for thi3 Island ? Manawatu is twelve miles from Rangitikei. When he sold land at Manawatu, Rangitikei was not sold (by that sale). Let Tami; hana cease telling falsehoods. Will he not be ashamed of his untruths.

Tamihana says this because he is jealous of those who still possess farms and runs in Rangitikei. His wish is that they should be sold, that all may bo like him who does not possess an acre of land in Rangitikei.
