South Australia.
We have to thn 28th March. The Adelaide Telegraph states that a rnmour wa-3 in circulation “ to the effect that the Lord Bishop of Adelaide and somo clergymen who are members of the Philosophical Society have retired from that association, in consequence of the lecture recently delivered by His Honour the Chief Justice on the ‘ Relation between Science and Theology.’” It seems that Mr. Hanson’s opinions on the subject were rather too latitudinarian to s uit the Episcopal palate:. In commenting on tlxisjincident the Telegraph says: leclge that the objections raised by the Chief justice to the authenticity of some of the scriptural books hitherto regarded as canonical, do not admit of a satisfactory reply nor that the clergy of South Australia are unable to furnish it. Yet to leave thorn unanswered would certainly give colour to such an opinion, and ter d much to establish Mr. Hanson’s views in the minds of many, who would be eager to fall, back upon any arguments on the other side. Clergymen, in fact, may fairly be expected to assist in discussions of this kind ;. and it savours little indeed of wisdom or of genuine religious spirit, for any body of men to separate themselves from a scientific society, because such points have been brought before them—without showing that they are improper, or without any attempt either to reconcile conflicting opinions or to- meet fair argument by fair argument.” Only 7720 acres remain unsold out of 125,000 acres offered for sale in the northern territory. The Moonta Copper Mining Company has declared another dividend of £5 per share.
It is understood that the Government is not favourable to the proposed increase in the postal charges fer letters to England.
