WAR WITH AFGHANISTAN.

The following telegrams appear in late Melbourne papers:—London, October B—The war with. Afghanistan was commenced on the Ist instant by an onslaught on the British troops, who won a brilliant victory, The Ameer's troops were completely routed, and the fortified frontier city of Alimusurd was captured. The British troops moved in strong force to attack, but the enemy was strongly posted and the battle lasted four hours. The enemy who was largely officered by Russians, lost largely. The British loss was slight. The Ameer, however, is undismayed by the repulse, and continues warlike preparations. The British are preparing to resume the advance, but the commissariat is defective and seriously impedes operations.—Russian officers who have returned to Central Asia report a complete entente cordiale between Russia and Cabal.—Twelve thousand Russian troops on the frontier indirectly support the Ameer.
