Record Price for Cow.

The highest price paid for a New Zealand-bred Jersey cow in the Dominion for many years was given this week at a sale at Tauwhare, Waikato, when the four-year-old cow Tolgarth Illusion sold to a bid of 600 guineas. The buyer was an Australian residing in Victoria.

Workers’ Threat. Notice of their intention to resign unless gumboots were provided by the end of the month was received by the Christchurch Drainage Board from eight employees on Tuesday evening. At about 9 o’clock on Monday night, a settler at Ngaturi heard a noise at his motor garage and on investigating found two men there, one being in military uniform and the other in civilian attire. The settler inquired what they were doing and one of them immediately assaulted him. He closed with his assailant and they fell to the ground. The other man, it is alleged, then drew a revolver and fired, but did not hit the settler, who then sprang to his feet, seized an axe handle which he had brought with him, and struck the man who fired the revolver on the wrist, causing him to drop the weapon. The two men then made off and escaped in a motor car. The police patrolled all the surrounding roads during the night, but so far the men have not been located.
