HEAVY PENALTY

The heaviest fine yet imposed by the Australian Special Court set up to deal with breaches of the Black Marketing Act has been made against the Gerard Proprietory, Ltd., general merchants, Grafton, New South Wales. The firm was fined £lOOO and costs for having sold 24 bottles of whisky at 18 guineas more than the fixed maximum price. An order was also issued that notices setting out charge and penalty should be displayed inside and outside the company’s premises for three months. This was the first prosecution against a company in New South Wales for black marketing. The firm will lodge an appeal.
