COMMODORE COLLINS

APPOINTED TO COMMAND AUSTRALIAN NAVY. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY. This Day. Captain J. A. Collins has been appointed Commodore, first-class, in command of the Australian naval squadron. He succeeds Rear-Admiral Crutchley. whose period of loan from the Royal Navy has expired. Commodore Collins. who is 45 years of age, is the first graduate of the Royal Australian Naval College to attain the rank of commodore, first class. He is also the first Australian to have the operational command of the Royal Australian Navy. Commodore Collins was the commanding officer of the cruiser Shropshire in recent actions against the Japanese at Arawe and Cape Gloucester, in the Admiralty Islands. He is most widely known as commander of the cruiser Sydney, which sank the Italian cruiser Bartholomeo Colleoni in the Mediterranean in July, 1940.
