Miss Stella Bunny, Gladstone, is visiting Wellington. Mrs. Hindley, who has been visiting Masterton, has returned to Blenheim. Dr R. S. Falla, Director of the Canterbury Museum, was the weekend guest of Mr and Mrs J. H. Cunningham, Renall Street, Masterton. The death occurred at Lower Hutt yesterday of Mrs. Rebecca Ruth Stunell, widow of Mr. Henry Stunell, of Greytown, in her 82nd year. Mr. Charles Stunell, of Greytown, is a son. The New Zealand Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) and the Australian Prime Minister (Mr Curtin) visited Cambridge University on Friday to receive the honorary degree of doctor of laws, a cablegram reports. At the monthly meeting of the Waipawa Hospital Board, the chairman, Mr W. H. Rathbone, Waipawa Borough, was heartily congratulated on his reelection unopposed after 25 years’ service on the board, including 19 years in his present office. The thirty-fifth annual Rotary convention at Chicago has elected Mr Richard H. Wells, of Pocatello, Idaho, president of the Rotary International, in succession to Mr Charles Wheeler, of San Francisco. The delegates included representatives from New Zealand, Australia, and Britain. The death occurred suddenly on Friday of Mr. John Kennerly Staples, a director of Levm and Co., Ltd., and manager of their wool department. He was born in Wellington 52 years ago and attended school at Petone. With the exception of three years in the service of the Farmers’ Distributing Company, the whole of his business life was spent with Levin and Co., whom he joined in 1906. Mr. Staples was well known in the Wairarapa. He served for three years in the last war, leaving the service with the rank of sergeant-major.
