STILL ADVANCING

EIGHTH ARMY FORCES IN APPENINES TOWN AND HIGH POSITIONS OCCUPIED. MINOR ACTIVITY IN OTHER AREAS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, May 10. Allied troops are pushing forward across the slopes of the Apdhhihhs, close behind the retreating German Tenth Army, and making new advances around Monte Maiella, says Reuter’s correspondent at Allied Headquarters in Italy. The Allies,! since the beginning of their advance last Saturday, have occupied 50 square miles of mountain country, including a number of important heights. In addition to occupying Palena, they took possession of the town of Gamberalc and the village of Fallscosa and also occupied a number of high points between Palena and San Angelo. The Allies are making a triple thrust. into a mountain sector only a few miles east of Marshal Kesselring’s main supply route through Sulmona. The withdrawal of the Germans is believed to have been forced upon them by Allied successes in recent weeks. The correspondent says the latest front line despatches report that the Germans are still falling back. Enemy movements have been observed south of the Allied advance and west of the Sulmona-Castel di Sangi’o Highway. Allied artillery acted as soon as the movements were discovered. Enemy mortars have been active north-west of Cassino, causing Allied casualties. Enemy patrols in the Adriatic sector are. probing the area two miles east of Tollo, where the Germans were forced to withdraw after a clash in which they suffered casualties. Artillery has been actiVe along the Garigliano and on the Anzio beachhead.
