DEEP SALIENT

CUT OFF GERMAN LINE IN ITALY SEQUEL TO DESTRUCTION OF DAM (By Telegraph--Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.40 p.m.) LONDON, May 9. In moving up southward of the 8,600 feet Monte Maiella, in the Catena area, about 30 miles inland from the Adriatic coast. Eighth Army troops have cut off a German salient which formerly extended eleven miles into the British lines, says the Brtiish United Press correspondent at Allied Headquarters. The Germans retreated a day after the Torre Dam was blasted. Water flooded an area only 20 miles north-eastward, possibly causing the withdrawal. The retreating Germans blew up bridges and tunnels and mined their line of retreat. German artillery and mortars in tfie Cassino area hammered against the railway station, where our troops are dug in on the southern edge of the town. There have been several patrol clashes on the Lower Garigliano, and the Germans around the Anzio beachhead showed signs of nervousness in face of our patrols, especially southwest of Cisterna.
