CHILDREN’S OUTING AN ENJOYABLE GATHERING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The weather was beautifully fine for the annual school picnic 'Which was held on the McDougall Estate. There was a large attendance of parents and visitors. The officials (Messrs Mclntosh, Sutton, Duggan and Riwai, assisted by the teachers Mr Scott and Miss Merlet) worked assiduously to get the various events off in time and to make the gathering an enjoyable one. The prizes were presented by Miss N. McDougall, who also presented to Ruth Karaitiana the cup won by her outright in the calf competition and to Kevin O’Brien the cup won in the lamb competition. In the evening a social gathering and dance was held in the half and again the attendance was large. The dance music was supplied by Miss B. Carter, extras being played by Mr C. Carter. Mr Mclntosh was M.C. Personal Items. Miss Hanlon is spending a holiday with relatives in Napier and Wellington. Mr J. T. Carter is visiting Otaki, where his mother is seriously ill. Mr and Mrs Shaw have been on a short visit to this district. Dog’s Remarkable Feat. What was considered a remarkable achievement by a dog owned by Mr “Scotty” Jackson, of Greytown, was witnessed in this district a few days ago. A Government official of the State Forest lost his binoculars in the Haurangi ranges and endeavours to find them proved unsuccessful owing to the rough nature of the country. Mr Jackson, accompanied by one of the government, visited the locality three days after the glasses had been lost. The dog was given the case to smell and its owner sent the dog away to search. After a wait of about twenty minutes, imagine their surprise when they espied the dog struggling through the scrub with the binoculars in its mouth. Mr Jackson states that the dog—a Labrador—has on several occasions found articles which the owners had lost.
