ENGINE DRIVERS’ STRIKE
DISPUTE IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA. RAIL TRANSPORT SYSTEM IDLE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.55 a.m.) „ PERTH, This Day. Because of a strike of engine drivers the whole of the Western Australian rail transport system is idle. Although there has been congestion and inconvenience comparatively few people have missed their work in Perth. All other alternative forms of transport have been fully loaded. Special issues of petrol are being made for the road cartage of perishable goods. The point at issue between the engine drivers and the Railway Department is the use of the new Garratt engines through a tunnel in the Darling Ranges, on the main Perth-Kalgoorlie line. A compulsory conference of the parties will be held today.
