PATRIOTIC APPEAL

MASTERTON DISTRICT AREA WOMEN’S ACTIVITIES. MANY ZONE MEETINGS HELD. One of the most largely attended zone meetings was held in the Masterton West School on Monday evening. Miss M. A. Kummer was in the chair. The meeting throughout was characterised by great enthusiasm, and showed that the district had been well canvassed beforehand by zone representatives. Miss M. A. Kummer was elected leader, and Mrs G. Studholme, Cole Street (telephone 1393), secretary. Mrs Fell was appointed to take charge of the raffles. A representative committee was elected, and is going into action at once. The shop day for this zone (which is number 3, Cole Street, Coradine Street and Cambridge Terrace), will be on April 26. Zone 2 (First, Second and Third Streets, etc.) held its meeting this week in the Lansdowne Sunday School, when Mrs P. Borthwick was elected leader and Mrs R. R. Burridge secretary. Zone 6, Renall Street, which held its meeting last week, with Mrs Fagan as leader, has been at work and has elected Mrs Hugo secretary. Zone 7, College Street, Cornwall Street, etc., would like it known that vegetables will be sold at the home of Mrs N. McKay, 79 Cornwall Street, on Fridays from 2 to 4. A meeting has been held of Zone 12 residents (Perry Street, Lincoln Road and Chapel Street), and Mrs J. J. Kennedy has been elected leader and controller of raffles, and Mrs N. Prior secretary. Zone 14 consists partly of a country area and partly of town streets, i.e., Kopuaranga, Te Whiti, Albert, Victoria, Wrigley and Hope Streets. A meeting has been held in town, with Mrs R. Miller, Kopuaranga, as leader. Miss W. Daniell is acting as secretary and town organiser. The shop day for this area is May 10. A meeting of part of Zone 15 was held yesterday at Rangitumau, with Mrs L. Wilton in the chair. It was decided to hold a shop day in conjunction with Bideford and Wangaehu on March 22. A card and dance evening will be held in the Rangitumau Hall on March 11. Other shop days will be held by Taueru and Brancepeth together, and also by Tinui parish. Any residents of town or country who have not yet been contacted and who are willing to help, are asked to get into touch with the executive’s secretary, Mrs W. L. Marchbank, Cambridge Terrace, telephone 2297. The executive would like to emphasise that this is a women’s effort, and that the main appeal to raise the district’s quota will come from the men’s executive.

A meeting of the executive was held last evening, and a series of rules was drawn up for the running of the shop. These will be sent to zone secretaries this week. It was decided that the drawing of all 6d and Is raffles be left in the hands of Mrs A. Hosking and Miss O. R. Sutherland. Shop hours have been fixed as from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

■ Non-perishable goods can be put in the windows from the ceding the shop day. Various matters regarding publicity were discussed. A suggestion was sent in to the executive that each evening after the striking of Big Ben and at the close of the silent period, one penny be placed aside in each household for the 1944 All Purposes Patriotic Appeal. This is heartily recommended by the executive, and such money may be handed in to the zone shop days, or sent to the secretary, Mrs Marchbank.
