LABOURER CHARGED
WiTH ATTEMPT TO INFLUENCE JURYMAN IN CASE OF ALLEGED ABORTION. MAGISTRATE REGRETS GRANTING BAIL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. “Unfortunately he is bailable as of right; otherwise I might have exercised my discretion and refused bail,” said the Magistrate, Mr J. L. Stout, in reference to John Barrett, a labourer, aged 64, who appeared on a charge of wilfully attempting to obstruct, pervert or defeat the course of justice, by attempting to persuade a juryman, by asking him to- take a lenient view for the accused in a case of alleged abortion. Mr Stout granted a police remand to February 16 and fixed bail at £3OO, with tw,o £l5O sureties.
