ATTACKED BY ALLIED AIRCRAFT MORE PROGRESS BY AMERICANS AT CASSINO EIGHTH ARMY PATROLS ACTIVE (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.55 a.m.) RUGBY, February 8. An Allied Central Mediterranean communique states: “The Americans continue to make progres at Cassino. Our troops in the Anzio beach-head have consolidated their positions. Eighth Army patrols were active. Our medium bombers attacked railways and roads in the Viterbo region and oil storage and depots at Leghorn. Troop concentrations and supplies were also hit at Cisterna. Fighterbombers attacked road and rail targets in rear of the enemy lines. Fighters flew many offensive patrols over the beach-head and broke up a number of enemy attacks. During the day 24 enemy aircraft and two gliders were destroyed. We lost five aircraft.”
