GREYTOWN
OBITUARY MR E. G. BEARD. (“Times-Age” Special.) The death occurred recently, after a short illness, of Mr Ernest Graham (“Spadger”) Beard, of Rangiotu. Mr Beard was born in Greytown 60 years ago, and on leaving school entered his father’s business, later launching out on his own account as a building contractor. He took an active part in local affairs, becoming a member of the Borough Council, and chairman of the Waiohine River Board. In 1916 he took up farming at Rangiotu, where he remained until his death. He was chairman of the Rangiotu Dairy Company for many years. Mr Beard was a lifelong Rugby football enthusiast. In his youth he played for the Greytown seniors forty years ago in the days of Jack Workman, Ted Raisen, Billy Jackson, Ern Cook, Tim McMaster and Bob Workman. He represented the Wairarapa for many seasons, and held office on that Rugby Union. While living at Rangiotu he coached the Huia Club, which won the Manawatu championship in 1919. and the Oroua Downs Club, which held an unbeaten record in competition football for five seasons, and won the seven-a-side tournament in Palmerston North in 1931. Besides his widow, he leave/?, four sons —Messrs Lindsay (Rangiotu), Kenneth (Dannevirke), Granam (overseas), and Don (Wellington)—and one daughter, Mrs Frank Lasenby (Matamata).
TOWN HALL TIMELY ENTERTAINMENT. Tonight the outstanding British drama, “One of Our Aircraft is Missing,” will be presented. It is thrilling and timely entertainment and features Hugh Williams, Eric Portman and Bernard Miles.
