GOAL EXCEEDED
CONSTRUCTION OF SHIPS IN UNITED STATES. OVER 19,000,000 TONS BUILT IN 1943. (Bv Telegraph-Press Association.) ’ WASHINGTON, January 4. American shipyards in 1943 turned out 1896 merchantmen, totalling 19,239,000 deadweight, tons, thus President Roosevelt’s goal of 19,000,000 tons, said Rear-Admiral Land, chairman of the Maritime Commission. The output in 1943 included 1238 Liberty shins, but the 1944 production, which schedules 20,000,000 tons, will concentrate on Victory shins instead of the slower Liberty shins.
